Billy Ray Chitwood and our Bengal Cat, George, now made our home in the beautiful resort of Bella Sirena in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico for three years. Our home overlooked the calm Sea of Cortez - an aquarium wonderland.
Penasco, aka Rocky Point, is an easy hour's drive south of Lukeville AZ. Lukeville pretty much consists of a gas station, post office, a couple of stores & restaurant and border patrol personnel. A friend coming down for the first time called in a panic, "I can't find Lukeville!" When asked to describe where he was calling from it was evident that he was in Lukeville. The Lukeville border is one of the few that has a midnight closing time and doesn't reopen until 6am. Get there at 12:05am and you spend the night in your car.
There have been travel warnings about driving to Penasco ever since (and before) 1948, which was the first time my family ventured down. People that know and love Penasco and it's beautiful beaches just shake their heads in amazement, remembering all the help that we've received over the years, the warm welcomes and smiling faces, the dancing, the cold cerveza on a hot day, the feel of sand between your toes. Can bad things happen? Of course. They can happen anywhere - just pick up your hometown newspaper. Do they happen less down here? I think so - many of the things you read in your paper on a daily basis would be a major story here. I remember when the first murder occurred here - American collage kids got into a fight with each and one of them ended up dead. The town was in shock as murder was not a part of their lives - and this was in the 60s.
But back to today and what is happening here in Penasco. A movie complex and Sam's Club just opened. A convention center is being built and funding has been approved for a home cruise port. Maybe in a couple of years people be sitting on our terrace watching Holland American liners cruise in and out with excited people lining the decks.
Each day is a wonderful adventure. Come to Penasco and share the wonder. www.bellasirena.com
And if you love history be sure to read my book, 'The World After WW1, 1918 - 1921' - through family letters it gives a personal view of all that was happening in the world at the end of WWI. Read about our boys being released from German POW camps, including Edgar Halliburton who was the first US POW. Rosalie O'Donnell (my great aunt) was stationed in Bern Switzerland, Paris France, Romania and Montenegro from 1918 - 1921. James Thurber was a friend of hers and wrote a delightful letter when 3 of the Red Cross woman were being transferred from Paris to Romania. The letters will make you laugh and cry and understand what the world was like at that time for the average person. History being made as it was being lived.
I also have another book, 'Animal Crackers In My Bed', which are short stories of the animals that have enchanted me and made my life so enjoyable in watching their antics.
Both books can be found on Amazon.com in Kindle or paperback.
