There is a convicted murderer who is claiming that the taxpayer owes him a sex change operation. We see it everyday in big and little things. No one seems to want to take responsibility for themselves. Let the other guy pay for it.
How have we turned into such an entitlement society? Remember the old adage, 'if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it'? Rome, Greece & even Russia, are there to remind us that when a country becomes one of entitlements it starts going downhill. Even in our own beginnings, at Jamestown, it was quickly discovered that if you gave everyone a free ride you all ended up starving to death, because those that did work ended up saying 'the heck with it' as they watched other people do nothing yet benefit from everyone else's labors.
Welfare is needed in some cases. But so much of it is wasted on those who use and abuse the system. And God help the poor person or politician who points out that many people who are on the welfare system don't belong there. So many will immediately jump all over them and declare that they are heartless.
Years ago in Pasadena I would see strong young men and women go into the Welfare office to pick up their checks, then to the bank next store to cash it. From there they proceeded to a nearby bar where they would drink while their children sat outside the bar on the sidewalk. I have to admit, this colored my viewpoint of who should be receiving welfare. Not only didn't the kids benefit from it, but they often got beat up by drunken parents. But if I pointed this out to anyone I was accused of not caring for the poor (actually at that time we were living on $300 a month and making sure our family was fed, clothed and sheltered - and not asking the government for any help).
So not all charity is a good thing. It can actually hurt those that it proposes to help. We need to use our heads as well as our hearts.
